Left lower abdominal pain is one of the common places where pain happens in the body. The lower left quadrant of the body hosts numerous of important organs, such as the sigmoid colon, descending colon, Fallopian tube, left uterine tube and left ovary. Left lower abdominal pain in women is quite common especially with pregnant women, as well as left lower abdominal pain in children and elderly people. There are many possibilities for what causes the pain in the first place and it is best to get it diagnosed as soon as possible. Read again my previous post about knee pain and pain behind knee.
Left Lower Abdominal Pain Caused by Diverticulitis and Cystitis
One of the possible causes for left lower abdominal pain is diverticulitis (Wikipedia). It is quite common especially in elder people. Diverticulitis happens when the diverticula or the small pouches bulged out from the digestive tract become infected or inflamed. When it affects the left lower abdomen, it is more likely that the inflammation happens to the diverticula in the large intestine. Left abdominal pain with diarrhea usually refers to this disease, which is quite tame and could be treated by resting and changing your daily diet. Nonetheless, a more serious case of diverticulitis might require a surgery.
Cystitis, which is also known as bladder inflammation, is another common cause for left lower abdominal pain. The inflammation of the bladder could be caused by either bacterial infection or as a reaction to a specific drug, although the infection is the more common cause. As long as the cystitis does not spread to the kidneys, it is not very threatening. It is annoying, though, and doctor consultation is needed immediately so that you could begin with the antibiotic medications.
Left Lower Abdominal Pain Caused by Appendicitis and Endometriosis
Appendicitis is another common cause for left lower abdominal pain which can affect anyone but most commonly found in people between the age of ten and thirty. The pain usually begins in the navel area, and then shift to other areas and becomes really severe in more than 12 hours. Immediate care should be given to people with appendicitis as a surgery is usually needed to remove the part and treat the pain.
Endometriosis is one of the causes for left lower abdominal pain that is reserved for women. It happens when the tissue layer that is supposed to grow inside of the uterus grows outside the uterus instead. This disorder is not life threatening, but it causes major disturbance to a woman’s life. Periods would be more painful and infertility might happen. It is best to get the disorder detected early to avoid further unnecessary pain and complications.
Left Lower Abdominal Pain Caused by Other Factors
There are a lot of other causes for the pain ranging from unthreatening disorder to fatal disease. Cancer, inguinal hernia, kidney stones, kidney infection, Crohn’s disease, mittelschmerz, ectopic pregnancy, intestinal obstruction, seminal vesiculitis, thoracic aortic aneurysm, ovarian cysts, torn colon, tuboovarian abscess and ulcerative colitis are all possible causes for the pain. It is best to treat the left lower abdominal pain as an indicator of something wrong in your body and go to your doctor for a professional diagnosis immediately.
